Calabogie Wakesurf Championships

event pan (Words By Drew Danielo) WOW! WOW! WOW! What a great weekend. If you didnt make it to the Calabogie Wakesurf Championship mark your calendar now for next year. This was the best event I have been to since I started wakesurfing. I flew into Ottawa, Canada on Thursday morning and met team rider Shane Blanton and team filmer Corbin Blanton at the airport. After a short issue trying to get a rental car we were on our way. Now we were originally under the impression the contest started friday. We were wrong, it started Thursday and Shane was do to ride about an hour from when we got the car. We had an hour and 20 minute ride we were told.  So after some Nascar style driving we pulled in just as the Outlaw riders hit the water.  Shane and fellow Phase 5 team rider Chris Hau killed it. Surf and Skim division.  It was a blast. I rode good in both divisions and the contest ended for the day.  After a bad attempt at a game of golf on the par 3 course, We enjoyed a campfire with the live entertainment of Chris Hau! More info on this board coming soon...[/caption]   The Rest of the contest was great. Everyone rode amazing and everyone came back to the dock with a huge smile on their face. Shane Blanton won the Outlaw Skim Division and for the first time stood on top of the podium.  Chris Hau had a great weekend and rode great every day. I rode really good all weekend and had one of the best final heats against Keenan Flegel where we both rode at a high level. With the running total from our highest score the first 2 days Keenan had me by 8 points. I beat him by 7.5 points in the final and finsihed in 2nd by half a point. It didnt matter it was awesome to have both of us give Calabogie the show they deserved. Dominic Legace finished in 3rd and rode solid all weekend. I also  ended up in 2nd place for Pro surf as well. I was riding the top secret Phase 5 Surf style. This board is so much fun.  The contest was perfect. Steve Karam and his crew did an amazing job of organizing and running the event. A very family fun contest. During this contest we met some people that will be Life long friends. Jaime and Katie Drew treating the Phase 5 crew like family. We spent hours out in their boat riding and having fun, eating at their families lake house and Jamie even took us the Ottawa Blues Festival.  Jaime also won the Mans Amatuer Skim with some fancy riding. [caption id="attachment_1325" align="alignnone" width="422"]concert boys Shane, Drew, Corbin and Jaime at The Ottawa Blues Festival[/caption] We met Chris Neil, NHL player for the Ottawa Senators. Youtube him. Now what you wouldnt know from watching the youtube videos is that Chris and his wife Cait are just like Drew and Katie. They're some of the most down to earth and nicest people I have ever met on the rode. Chris also shreds a Phase 5 board behind his boat. Wakesurfing, Golf, Base Jumping from an airplane, Chris Hau playing guitar while Parasailing, Lots of fun people, great friends, friendly rivalry,  But the biggest thing it had was FUN! [caption id="attachment_1339" align="alignnone" width="447"]skydive Base jumping from an airplane into the contest site.[/caption] When I left for this contest I had the normal precontest feeling. I had no idea how many lifelong memmories and friends I would make. You can bet that I will be back next year and I will have the family with me to enjoy the contest and the beautiful Calabogie lake. The best part of this whole event was when I was able to give a brand new Phase 5 to a young rider. Joey Robinson is 13 years old. He signed up for the Juniors division but with him as the only rider he moved up to amatuer mens skim. He shredded all weekend. The following week was his birthday so we stoked him out with a brand new Phase5 Icon. The best part is earlier that morning he texted his mom and asked her for a New Phase 5 for his birthday and even sent her a link to buy one. Well Happy Birthday Joey!
