2013 Nautique Wakesurf Nationals

nat 35 (Words By: Drew Danielo, Photo's By: Eric Grindland and Justin Shock) WOW, What an event. The event started for us Wednesday when we loaded up the trucks and headed north for Pine Mountain, Georgia. We arrived at the beautiful Callaway Gardens around 9pm. We ate and then off to the rooms to get some rest for an early start. 6 am came fast! We were awake and eating breakfast. We headed off to the event sight and this is when we realized how awesome this event would be! The Robin Lake set up was perfect. A big shaded grandstand over the lake with an announcers booth and room for everyone were just some of the great features. We hung up about a total of 3,782' of banners which gave this place a first class look. Nautique, Phase 5 and Scott Culp spared no expenses for this event. After set up and a quick boat test it was time for lunch and a round of golf on the Mountain Course. Justin, Blake and myself tee'd of at 2pm. It was a great course and we enjoyed it for 5 1/2 hours haha. A bunch of lost balls, Justin never hitting a fairway and a few trips to the sandtrap and we were finally done. It was off to the hotel and to the Registration party. AGAIN Drew in the sand... AGAIN[/caption] The party was fun, all the top riders came for this event. We met up with fellow Team Riders Shane Blanton. Stacia Bank and Trevor Grindland. After hanging out it was back to the room to get ready for Day 1. [caption id="attachment_1467" align="alignnone" width="810"]The start of a Great event! The start of a Great event![/caption] Day 1: As the sun came up on the lake the event was kicking off. Masters division was the start of the event. The guys threw down and set the tone for the contest. Day 1 was packed with good riding. The whole Phase 5 team was killing it and our new Surf Style board was making alot of noise on and off the water. Stacia Bank rode in Pro Womens skim and Surf and was blasting the highest airs on her Phase 5's in both divisions. She also nailed some great spins on her skim board. Trevor had a killer first day run with some shuvs, bigspin and 3 shuv in his run. I also had a good first day. Rode solid and got most of the tricks I wanted. Shane killed it in his first run stomping a big 3 shuv right at the finish bouy. Using their Nss System, Nautique used one boat to pull both Regular and Goofy riders. This was a great time saving feature. Everyone at the event was happy with the wave and We thank Nautique for pulling the Nationals this year. Day 2: Day 2 saw the masters division kick things off with alot of 360's, Some good Shuv it attempts and Flying Mike Viland boosting some huge airs for the win. 4 of the boys in Amatuer skim all fell on their 360's in day 1. These guys were killing it on their Phase 5's and I knew I could help them land it. So before their finals run on saturday we had a quick 360 clinic on the dock. Each one of them took everything I said and listened to each step of the trick. I was lucky enough to be anouncing when they rode . First up was Nathan about half way thru his first pass he set up, Hand in the wave, looked over his back shoulder and spun so smooth and LANDED his 360. I was so stoked! Following that was Christian, He had a great first pass and at the very end of his run (where we couldn't see) he dissapeared behind the wave and we all thought he was spinning but couldnt tell. Then he just stood up and kept riding. We got the replay and he STUCK the cleanest 360 ever. The 3rd boy (sorry forgot 1 name) also nailed his 360 in his final run. I was so excited I was 3/4 with 1 more to go. Leland takes to the water and starts off a great pass. Goes for his 3 but the contest jitters got him and he spun to fast and fell. I was nervous, I wanted him to land it. Second pass he took a fall on something else. I knew he didnt have much room as he passed the 3/4 boy and only had room for 1 trick. Leland stuck his hand in the water and then spun one of the slowest, most controlled 360's I have ever seen from someone his age. The smile these guys all had when they came to the dock reminded me why I love this sport. This was the highlight of my weekend. [caption id="attachment_1482" align="alignnone" width="810"]The 360 Amigo's!! The 360 Amigo's!![/caption] The rest of day 2 was great. Alot of good riding and good times with friends. Trevor and Shane both had a little bit of an off day but still rode solid. Day 3: Finals Day: Pressure was on and everyone stepped up to the plate. Stacia came out swinging and landed a 1080 in her skim run along with some monster airs. Trevor had a good finals run. He rode his best the first day but thats how contest go and we know Trevor shreds! He is a great rider and we are stoked that he is part of the Phase 5 Family. I rode a really solid final on my Skim board and would later learn that just 1 more little trick would have been the one. Stacia and I then got to shred the new Phase 5 Aku surfboard. I rode good tried some new tricks and had fun. Stacia KILLED IT. She does the biggest airs I have seen from the girls division. She landed a 3rd place finish in Pro Womens Skim and Pro Womens Surf. I finsihed in the 2nd Place spot by 1/10 of a point. Phase 5 was super excited to be apart of this event. We also handed out our first ever Full Surf Style board to the winners. The new Phase 5 Aku will be available in 2014 and it is already making a statement in the surf style category! The overall vibe of this event was a fun in the sun time. Lots of good riding, A very well ran and organized event by Scott Culp and Nautique did their job of making a great wave for us. Thank You to all the competitors and sponsors for supporting this event. We cant wait for next year!
